The Transition from art to Artist: Do you see God through nature? (Part 6)

Part 6: The Fruit of Contemplation: Gratitude as Worship

The Natural Response to Beauty

After observing the universe, reflecting on its meaning, and understanding our role as its audience, a single response naturally flows from the heart: gratitude. This is the final and most important part of our journey. The Risale-i Nur explains that gratitude (shukr) is not merely saying “thank you”; it is the very purpose of our existence and the highest form of worship (ibadah).

The Three Dimensions of True Gratitude

True gratitude is a comprehensive state of being that involves our heart, our tongue, and our actions.

  1. To Feel it in the Heart: The first step is to recognize that every blessing—from the air we breathe to the food we eat—is a direct gift from a single, Merciful Provider. It is to see His compassion and generosity in everything we receive.
  2. To Declare it with the Tongue: We then express this inner feeling with words of praise and thanks, acknowledging the Giver by name. This verbal declaration reinforces the reality of the gift in our own minds and hearts.
  3. To Show it Through Action: This is the most vital dimension. True gratitude is shown by using God’s gifts in accordance with the purpose for which they were given. The gratitude for eyesight is not just to say “Thanks for my eyes,” but to use them to see the wonders of creation and avoid what displeases the Creator. The gratitude for wealth is to share it with those in need.

This understanding turns our entire life into a continuous act of worship. Eating becomes worship when we recognize the food as a divine provision. Working becomes worship when we use our skills for good. Every interaction and every moment, when viewed through the lens of gratitude, becomes a beautiful response to the Giver of all things. This, the Risale-i Nur teaches, is the sweet fruit of faith and the key to a joyful, purpose-filled life.
