The Universe as a Book of Meaning
In the teachings of the Risale-i Nur, we are encouraged to look at the universe not as a random assortment of matter, but as a book filled with meaning, a magnificent palace flawlessly administered. Every aspect of the universe, from the predictable journey of the stars to the life-giving properties of the sun and rain, points to the existence and oneness of a single, All-Powerful Creator. The faultless order we witness around us is one of the most compelling arguments for Him.
The Stamp of Oneness (Tawhid)
The Risale-i Nur explains that this perfect order is the “stamp of Tawhid,” or Divine Oneness. If multiple creators were involved in the universe’s administration, the result would inevitably be conflict and chaos. Just as a town cannot have two mayors or a country two kings without inviting discord, the absolute harmony of the cosmos demonstrates the necessity of a single Sovereign. This unity is visible everywhere: The laws of physics, like gravity, are consistent and universal, governing everything from the fall of an apple to the orbit of a galaxy. This uniformity points to a single Lawgiver. Separate elements work together in perfect harmony. The sun, clouds, soil, and air all cooperate to sustain plant life, acting like disciplined soldiers in the army of a single Commander. There is no waste or pointlessness in creation. Every being, no matter how small, has a purpose and performs a specific function, indicating a comprehensive wisdom that directs all things.
Mercy as a Universal Sign
The Risale-i Nur draws our attention to the all-embracing mercy evident in creation. A compassionate hand provides for every living creature, from the microscopic organism to the largest whale. This universal provision, which caters to the needs of all beings without exception, can only originate from an All-Compassionate One whose Treasuries are Infinite. To see the universe in this light is to read the signs that make its Author known. Every created being is like a meaningful word, pointing beyond itself to the perfect attributes of its Writer. The order, wisdom, and mercy woven into the fabric of the universe are clear reflections of an All-Wise, All-Powerful, and All-Compassionate Creator.
