The Authorized Interpreter and the Divine Telephone

In our previous discussions, we established that the universe is not a silent collection of matter, but a Mighty Book. Every star, every leaf, and every atom acts as a meaningful letter or a word inscribed by the Pen of Power. However, a book remains a mystery if its language is unknown. Human reason, though a magnificent tool, often finds itself standing before this cosmic library in a state of bewilderment. We can measure the distance to the stars and the chemical composition of a seed, but science alone cannot answer the why of existence or the who behind the art. Without an authorized teacher, the universe remains a silent, cold machine rather than a purposeful communication from the Creator.

Bediuzzaman Said Nursi uses the profound metaphor of a Divine Telephone to explain the role of the prophet Muhammad. Consider a great king who has two forms of speech. One is a private conversation on a telephone regarding a minor, personal need. The other is a universal decree issued from the height of his sovereignty to all his subjects, explaining the laws of his kingdom and the purposes of his reign. The prophet is the one who received this universal address. He is the link that connects our finite, often distracted minds to the infinite, pre-eternal will of the Creator.

Without this authorized interpreter, man is like a traveler in a dark, terrifying desert who possesses only a tiny, flickering match, which is his own limited intellect. This match might show him a few feet in front of him, but it also creates long, distorted shadows that frighten the heart. The traveler sees the monsters of death and the abysses of the unknown. But when the authorized interpreter speaks, it is as if a massive electric switch is turned on, flooding the desert with light. Suddenly, the monsters are revealed to be familiar domestic animals serving the traveler, and the abysses are revealed to be beautiful gardens of the Most Merciful.

The prophet does not invent the truth; he discloses it. He explains that the sun is not just a ball of fire, but a subservient lamp in the guesthouse of the world. He teaches that the rain is not a random weather event, but drops of mercy sent from a divine treasury. By following the teacher, the grammar of the universe becomes clear. We learn that we are not accidental occurrences in a chaotic world, but honored guests of a Most Compassionate Host. This interpretation transforms our very existence, changing a life of anxiety into one of profound meaning and gratitude.

Human beings often fall into the trap of thinking that physical causes are the true masters of reality. We see the rain and we thank the clouds. We see the bread and we thank the soil. However, the teacher of the Book reminds us that these are merely veils. The clouds have no heart to pity us and the soil has no mind to feed us. They are like the strings of a puppet, held by an unseen hand. The prophet acts as the one who draws back these veils, allowing us to see the Hand of Power directly. He connects us to the source of all existence.

If we were left to our own devices, the universe would appear as a mourning place. We would see only the decay of autumn and the silence of the grave. But through the lens of prophethood, decay is seen as a discharge from duty and the grave is seen as a doorway to a more beautiful world. The prophet Muhammad teaches us the language of the Creator so that we can read the book of our own lives. He provides the context for our existence, showing us that our small lives are part of a vast, purposeful, and eternal plan.

Ultimately, the necessity of the messenger arises from the infinite nature of the Creator. Because the Divine perfections are beyond human grasp, they must be represented through a mirror. The prophet is that perfect, polished mirror. He reflects the light of the sun of reality in a way that we can observe and follow. He is the bridge between the finite and the infinite, the mortal and the eternal. By adhering to his guidance, we move from the darkness of materialism into the light of true belief.
