Understanding the Light (Part 4)

Part 4: The Unique Nature of the Human Soul

As we continue our journey through the Risale-i Nur, we now turn our attention inward, to the very core of what makes us human: the soul, or ruh in Arabic. Said Nursi stresses the deep and special nature of the human soul. Unlike our physical body, which is part of the material world, the soul is seen as a bright and lasting part of us, holding immense potential and a natural longing for truth and connection.

Our Innate Search for Meaning

The Risale-i Nur suggests that our natural search for meaning and purpose comes from the very essence of our soul. We aren’t just biological machines driven by instinct; we have minds, emotions, and a deep desire to understand why we exist and our place in the universe. This longing, according to Nursi, is like a signpost guiding us toward our ultimate purpose.

The Purpose of Human Existence: Knowing and Worshipping God

The Risale-i Nur explains that the main purpose of human existence is to know and worship God. This worship, however, isn’t just about rituals. Instead, it includes truly recognizing God’s presence, power, and wisdom in every part of life. It means using our minds to understand His creation, our hearts to feel gratitude and love for Him, and our actions to live according to His guidance. This recognition and conscious connection bring real fulfillment and meaning to our lives.

Developing Our Spiritual and Moral Character

The Risale-i Nur highlights how important it is to actively develop our spiritual and moral character. Just like a seed needs care to grow into a strong, fruit-bearing tree, our souls need nurturing through good actions, honest intentions, and a constant effort to purify ourselves. Overcoming negative traits like selfishness, envy, and carelessness, and building positive qualities such as compassion, honesty, and humility are seen as vital steps to reaching our soul’s full potential and drawing closer to our purpose.

Addressing Inner Struggles and Finding Inner Peace

The journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth isn’t always easy. The Risale-i Nur acknowledges the inner battles we face, the conflicts between our desires and our higher goals. It offers guidance on how to handle these challenges through faith, patience, and seeking help from God. By understanding the nature of our soul and its connection to the Divine, we can find a deeper sense of inner peace and stability even when life gets tough.
