Understanding the Light (Part 2)

A Rational Approach

As we continue our exploration of the Risale-i Nur, it’s important to remember that belief in God, known as Allah in Arabic, forms the very foundation of Islamic faith. Said Nursi, the author of the Risale-i Nur, places great emphasis on understanding this fundamental truth. His approach is unique in that he seeks to present the existence and oneness of God in a way that deeply resonates with our minds and intellect, encouraging a reasoned faith.

The Risale-i Nur suggests that the world around us, in all its complexity and wonder, offers compelling evidence for the existence of a Creator. Consider the intricate order we observe everywhere, from the delicate balance of an ecosystem to the astonishing design of the human body and the vast, precisely moving cosmos. Can such detailed and purposeful systems arise on their own, without an intelligent designer? Nursi argues that the sheer intricacy and apparent purpose we see in nature point directly to a Wise and Powerful Creator. He describes creation as a magnificent work of art, so meticulously crafted that it necessitates a Master Artist.

Furthermore, the Risale-i Nur highlights the profound interconnectedness and harmony present throughout the universe. Everything seems to work together in a delicate balance. Think about how different creatures rely on each other, the continuous cycle of water that sustains life, or the symbiotic relationships between plants and animals. This deep interdependence, where countless elements cooperate seamlessly, suggests a single, unifying power behind it all. The consistent laws of nature that govern everything, from the smallest atom to the largest galaxy, also point to a single Lawgiver orchestrating this grand design.

The Risale-i Nur thoughtfully addresses doubts and materialistic viewpoints that attempt to explain the universe without a Creator. While acknowledging the importance of scientific inquiry, Nursi points out the inherent limitations of a purely materialistic worldview in fully explaining the origin and the intricate complexity of life and the cosmos. He suggests that when we use our reason thoroughly and without prejudice, we are naturally led to recognize the existence of a Necessary Existent, a Being upon whom all else depends.

A core principle of Islam, powerfully explained in the Risale-i Nur, is Tawhid – the absolute oneness and uniqueness of God. Nursi argues that the unity and harmony we observe in creation strongly suggest that there is only one ultimate Source of all existence, power, and knowledge. If there were multiple independent deities, the universe would likely exhibit chaos and conflict rather than the integrated order we witness. The Risale-i Nur emphasizes that all creation originates from and is sustained by this single, unique Divine Being.

Take some time to observe the world around you with these ideas in mind. Whether you are looking at the intricate patterns and perfection of a flower, the vastness of the night sky, or the delicate balance of life in a small pond, consider the evidence for a Wise and Powerful Creator. What aspects of the natural world resonate with you as signs of a deliberate and unified design?

In our next part, we will continue to explore the Risale-i Nur’s perspective on the universe, delving deeper into the idea of creation as a meaningful “book” that reveals the beautiful attributes of God.
